Officially Rector's five-year term of office commences on 1 January 2010, when the new Universities Act comes into force. Professor Holli has served as Rector since August 2009. Professor Holli (born in 1950) is professor of palliative medicine at the University of Tampere and has served as a Head of the Medical School since 2004. She took a Ph.D. in medicine at the University of Tampere in 1988. The first Vice Rector, Pertti Haapala, Professor of Finnish History and the second Vice Rector, Harri Melin, Professor of Sociology, were also elected to continue in their posts for five-year terms in effect from the 1.1.2010. The new Universities Act will strengthen both the status of the Rector and the financial responsibility laid upon. Rector is responsible for the preparation and presentation of matters to be processed by the Board of the University and must therefore enjoy the confidence of the Board.
