The interim University collegiate body competent to serve until 31 December 2009 has chosen the New Board for the University of Tampere on 7.9.2009 according to the New Universities Act coming into a force on 1.1.2010.  The Board is to serve until the end of 2012.

The Board hosts 11 members, 6 persons from the groups presenting the internal groups of the university and 5 persons external to the university. Out of the internal groups, 2 members were chosen among the professors, 2 among the employees and 2 among students. Student members are Secretary for Academic Affairs Ms Johanna Roihuvuo and Mr Timo Perälä.

External members are PhD Rauno Ihalainen, PhD Leena Lahti, Doc. of Adm. Sc. Kaija Maijonen, Doc. of Ec. Sc. and mining counsellor Kari Neilimo and Lic.Sc. Tech. Riitta Varpe. Other members from the internal groups are Arto Haveri (Doc. of Adm. Sc., professor), Jyrki Nummenmaa (PhD, professor), Marja Alastalo (researcher, Doc. of Soc. Sc.) and Kaisa Lammi (Ma of Adm. Sc., head of development unit).

The new Board of the University of Tampere has elected Professor Kari Neilimo to be its chair. At its first meeting on Wednesday 23 September the Board elected Director Riitta Varpe as its vice-chair.  Kari Neilimo was previously a professor of economic sciences at the University of Tampere, director of S-group and member of the University of Tampere Board 2005–2008. He is chair of the board of the Finnish public service broadcasting YLE. His special field is strategic management.

According to the New University Act at least 40 per cent of the members on the board of a public university must be persons external to the university. The members are elected by the university collegiate body, which may also decide to have an external majority on the board, if it so wishes. The chair and vice-chair of the board are elected from amongst the external members.

Note that the Board's decisions regarding the collegiate body are conditional until the enactment of the new Universities Act, after which the University Board will officially finally confirm the decisions.
