Tamy's cockade, sash and flag

Tamy's cockade

If you have a Finnish student cap and it is in its original condition, it probably holds the golden lyre cockade of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki. Yikes!

You can buy the beautiful cockade of Tamy, i.e. YOUR student union, at the ridiculously low price of €6 from the Juvenes bookshop in the Main Building or from Tamy's office in the second floor of Yo-talo in Kauppakatu 10. Because let's face it – who would want to celebrate May Day wearing a student cap with the wrong student union's cockade on it?

In addition to the lyre, Tamy also has a sash and flag of its own. Their colours are blue and gold instead of the red in Tamy's logo. The sash and flag are mainly seen in anniversary celebrations.

Independence Day torchlight processionTamy's flag

As the name suggests, the Independence Day torchlight procession is an event Tamy and the Student Union of Tampere University of Technology organize on Finland's Independence Day, 6 December.

In the procession, students wearing dark clothes and white student caps walk from the University Main Building to the soldier's graves in Kalevankangas Graveyard and from there to the Central Square to the City's Independence Day ceremonies.

The Student Union chairs give a speech at the graveyard on alternate years. Together, the chairs also place a wreath on the grave. After the wreath is laid down, the procession walks along Itsenäisyydenkatu to the Central Square to watch the City of Tampere's traditional firework display.
